As the war in Iraq unfolds, We will continue to provide our readers with images from this unfortunate conflict. Many of these photographs will, and have been, quite gruesome. Many will also be controversial, such as those of American POWs.

The purpose of these images is to engage the reader on a level not found, indeed suppressed, within Western corporate media. The constant sanitization of war by this same media since the conflict in Vietnam has led to an American culture that accepts war as a glorious, if not romantic endeavor, waged for flowery and moral reasons. The filth, horror, and primitiveness have been removed like it's some kind of fattening food that needs to be altered before its deemed fit for consumption and digestion.

It is this practice that has led to a violence obsessed culture which vicariously "experiences" violence whenever it can, while remaining completely unfamiliar with the "real thing." It is this trend and condition we hope to counter by the inclusion of such images.

There will no doubt be zealots of all persuasions, or perhaps the person next door, who will accuse us of sensationalism and disrespect as well as being propagandists for the Arabs, or Muslims or Zionists or Americans. This is to be expected.

We hope then that these images will bring at least some of our readers to a place where a more real and human-based assessment of this conflict and war in general can be made in the light of the horrible reality that they reveal.

On Thursday, an MoD spokeswoman told BBC News Online that the two drivers were sub-contractors to the British Army working through an unnamed company in Saudi Arabia.
She said they had been part of a convoy with a military escort, but had become separated after it was halted by a "civil disturbance".
