War

War should never be an option. It destroys lives, homes, and the souls of many people who's hearts become filled with hate and rage. War is costly in every since of the word and although a house or school can be rebuilt, a life can not. There are many excuses and justifications for war, but none hold water.

It has been said about the war in Iraq that we tried all other alternatives to no avail. Nice try, but until we give up on finding a peaceful solution and resort to violence there are always other alternatives. Only in giving up the search for non-violent alternatives, does the search fail. The UN was created as a forum to work out our problems. It did not fail us, we failed it by not abiding with it's decisions. They searched for WMDs on our behalf, and found none. It was their finding that Iraq had disarmed after the first Iraq War. We then called them liars and inept and they searched even more only to come to the same conclusion. We then plunged ahead with war against their advise and now it turns out that they were correct all along.

There are many who believe that this war was necessary for an ever changing list of reasons. Retaliation for 9/11, destruction of weapons of mass destructions, to end terrorism, to bring about peace, freedom, democracy and stability, to protect our supply of oil, to protect the value of the Dollar from the Euro, the list goes on and on. As for retaliation of 9/11, it was not Iraq who attacked us and even if they had, revenge is not a noble cause for anything. If a kid down the street throws a rock at your child, would you advise him to kill the kid? Did we find and destroy any WMDs? Nada, unless you count the cluster bombs and bunker busters we dropped on Iraq. Did we bring an end to terrorism? Absolutely not, and as a matter of fact we have only served their cause by creating a hundred new terrorist for every one that existed before this war. We have yet to bring any kind of peace, freedom, stability or democracy unless you count freeing criminals, or the peace in being dead. Is the oil flowing? Not today says the news. Oil is at a standstill and cost more at the pump than ever before. About twice what it was before this madness. As for protecting our dollar, we may have halted the switch from the US Dollar to the Euro for oil tender, but only temporarily. All OPEC has to do to make the switch is say the word and it will come to pass that you will need a wheelbarrow of dollars to buy a bicycle.

Terrorism really sucks. There are people all over the world who hate us with such conviction and passion that they are willing to sacrifice their own lives in a feeble attempt to bring about change. That is an awesome amount of faith and courage. Do you think you could sacrifice your life for your values? Is your faith that strong? Probably not.

In order to do such a thing you must believe with all your heart and soul that you have the moral high ground and that your cause is just and true. What we need to attack is not people who hate us, but the reasons that they hate us. To do this we must identify what those reasons are and fix those things. We are the mightiest people in history but it is not our smart bombs or nuclear arms that make us great, it is the principles that our nation were founded on and those principles include justice, freedom and truth. If we live by those principles, how could anyone hate us?

Let's try to identify the reasons that these "terrorist" hate us. What did we ever do to them?

First and foremost, many of these people believe that we are trying to kill them and they are attacking us to make us stop. Why do they believe this? Probably because it is true. Our support in military aid to Israel which allows them to raze entire villages and kill the Islamic population is a big part of this. We supply Israel with sophisticated smart bombs, apache helicopters and more money than we give to any other country on the planet, and they do indeed use it to kill thousands. We may not have US soldiers pulling the trigger, but we are killing Arabs. It needs to stop. Even the WMDs we were searching for in Iraq were for the most part, stockpiles of chemical weapons that were produced by the US and sold to Iraq to use on Iran. We are just as responsible for the people gassed in Iraq's war with Iran because we supplied the gas knowing full well that it was intended to be used on those people.

Many would argue that because so many of the Palestinians are suicide bombers that they must keep a war going to retaliate. War does not bring about peace and in this case it just keeps the cycle going. Palestinians become suicide bombers because the lack the fancy helicopters, guided smart bombs, and endless supply of heavy arms that the Israeli people have. They are David fighting Goliath the great evil giant. They use whatever they have even if it comes down to throwing rocks at tanks.

Many "terrorist" believe that we are corrupt evil dishonest and self serving people and many of our actions support this theory. We demand that they follow international law and abide by treaties, yet, when it pertains to the US, we do not follow or even acknowledge international law and we break any treaties when we feel it is to our best interest. We make promises to countries and even our own people that we do not keep, we pledge monies we do not deliver and sometimes we even encourage people to revolt against their government, telling them we will help, but when the fighting gets tough we abandon them. Our word is not good and our promises worthless. We demand that others not posses WMDs, yet we have enough stockpiled to destroy the entire planet several times over. We are a war waiting to happen.

Our military will never convince people that we are good honest people, but our actions could. If we were honest, just and fair in our dealings with all peoples then they would be our friends and terrorism would mot exist because people would not fear and hate us. We need to know that our dealings are fair and honest and that our objectives in changing the world are to make it better for everybody. We should be able to stand on the moral high ground.

War is wrong. I am not really that much into Christianity, but I do believe Jesus was an awesome man. When reacting to the actions of others it is not a bad idea to ask yourself "what would Jesus do". I have a wonderful family and I also ask, would my mother approve? What would my granddad do?

Our soldiers are, for the most part good hard working and compassionate people. Most joined in order to get a good education and some joined to make a positive change in the world. Support those fine young people and bring them home. They had no idea what they were bargaining for. None probably believed that doing their duty would result in killing innocent families, blowing the hands and feet off of little children, and terrorizing an entire country. Ask your self how it would fill to know that the ordinance you just fired set some unsuspecting family's house on fire and consumed a 4,5 or 6 year old child or even an entire family. How would it feel to know that you caused a ten year old to loose their arms and legs or their eyesight? How exciting would it be to have to scoop up you buddies entrails after being hit by an improvised explosive?

If my father's mental state after the Korean conflict is any indication of how it feels, these young men and women will have terrible nightmares for the rest of their lives.
