It may be that the so-called "war" in Afghanistan will turn out to be the joker rather than an ace. No matter. He is still trying to wage it using language in which secular moralism and religious fervour strive for predominance. Indeed, he is probably the most moralistic and religiose Prime Minister since Gladstone himself. Full Article

DOJ's Anti-Terrorism Law Would Dismantle Civil Liberties

San Francisco, California - The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) today criticized the "Mobilization Against Terrorism Act" proposed by the US Department of Justice because many provisions of the law would dramatically alter the civil liberties landscape through unnecessarily broad restrictions on free speech and privacy rights in the United States and abroad.

EFF again urged Congress to act with deliberation in approving only measures that are effective in preventing terrorism while protecting the freedoms of Americans. Full Article

Bush uses nuclear threat to keep allies in line

Mr Bush threatened some allies with action for moderate support.

"A coalition-builder must do more than just express sympathy. A coalition-builder must perform," the president said. "All nations, if they want to fight terrorism, must do something. It's time for action." Full Article

SA brushes off US: no victuals for warships

SOUTH Africa will not allow US warships to dock in its ports while the military campaign against Afghanistan continues, a press report on Monday quoted a senior official as saying.

Sipho Pityana, the director general of foreign affairs, said South Africa had taken this position as the country "will not collaborate with the US militarily" in the war against terrorism, the Cape Times reported. Full Article
